Course in Wound Closure

As part of this one-day course, you will have the opportunity to explore a range of wound closure, wound care & suturing methods and learn the unique benefits and limitations of each wound closure and suturing technique that must be considered in each individual case.

Students will be provided with our Wound Closure Student Kits on the day, which will be used throughout the practical parts of the workshop.

At the successful completion of the Course in Wound Closure (11257NAT), students will have the knowledge and skills to determine the best wound closure technique for each situation to achieve durability and simplicity.

Students will develop the ability to close wounds using a variety of methods and materials including sutures, skin staples, tissue adhesive and adhesive strips.

To achieve competency in this course, students must:

• Competently complete an assessment covering essential knowledge and skills
• Demonstrate competency through a series of continuous practical skills assessments throughout the duration of the course, including the demonstration of various wound closure techniques.

Develop knowledge and skills exploring a range of wound closure and suture techniques with a face-to-face workshop where students are equipped with a workshop kit. Understand what the optimal wound closure methodology would be based on the simplest procedure with the most durable outcome for patients.

The workshop day is primarily skills-based with approximately 2hrs of theory intermittently delivered throughout the day, whilst the remainder is practical skills development.

The practical elements will include the demonstration and practice of various suturing techniques, use of tissue glue and staples to close wounds.

Each student is provided with their own set of suturing and wound closure resources for use during the course.

Simulated wound closure is performed using pig trotters to simulate human tissue. The trainer is there to guide and help you develop your technique and will be constantly checking your work and assessing your technique during each session.

Morning tea and lunch are provided on the day.

Yes, suturing and wound closure can be added to your scope of practice, as long as certain conditions are met. You must be qualified (have competently completed the Benchmarque Group or similar accredited course) and you must be authorised (a policy or procedure stating the conditions that need to be met for you to perform wound closure in each workplace that you are employed in, as these conditions may differ from city to rural or remote location with regard to autonomy). If these criteria are met, then you can safely perform wound closure.

Continuing professional development is the means by which members of the clinical profession maintain, improve and broaden their knowledge, expertise and competence, and develop the personal and professional qualities required throughout their professional lives.

The CPD cycle involves reviewing practice, identifying learning needs, planning and participating in relevant learning activities, and reflecting on the value of those activities.

As a general guide, one hour of active learning equates to one hour of CPD. It is the responsibility of the individual student to calculate how many hours of active learning have been completed. The hours of active learning estimated above should act as a guide to CPD hours.

For all other health professionals completing this program, your continuing professional development (CPD) requirements may vary and it is important to remember that it is your responsibility to maintain and register CPD with your professional body. In many instances, your regulatory authority will recognise hours of learning as stated above.

12 Months. The time is calculated from when a student is provided with online access to their assessment. Within the accessIQ platform, students will be provided an initial 12 months to complete and submit all required assessment activities. Friendly email reminders will be sent to students to ensure an assessment is completed on time. At the completion of the 6 month period, students can request up to a maximum of 2 extensions, each extension being for a period of 90 days. If requesting a second extension, the request must be in writing.

If the entire 12 month period expires and a final assessment has not been submitted, The Benchmarque Group reserves the right to deem the assessment Not Competent and remove the student from the program.

If you are deemed Not Yet Competent on your first and second assessment submissions, feedback will be provided. It is very important that you read all the feedback provided. The Assessor will have identified any areas where additional evidence is required or any questions that need to be reviewed and resubmitted. If, after 3 unsuccessful submissions, you are unable to demonstrate competency on your assessment, your assessment will be deemed Not Competent. Feedback will be provided to you and what the possible following steps and outcomes are.

At the completion of the program, successful students will receive a Statement of Attainment for the Course in Wound Closure (Course Code 10762NAT). A Statement of Attainment is issued when an individual has completed one or more accredited units.

To move your workshop date, you will be required to pay a non-refundable fee. Please choose your workshop carefully as it is a requirement that your pre-requisite learning is completed and assessed before you can attend your scheduled workshop. If you do not complete your pre-requisite learning in time for the workshop, you may be required to pay further fee(s) to reschedule.
